Cypress Cove Petanque

The Petanque complex at Cypress Cove consists of six courts and a large shelter with picnic tables, near the golf cart rental shop.  Games are scheduled for two different times daily and informal games are welcome at any time.  Petanque is extremely simple, just like Bocci. There's a target, and you have to get as close to it as possible.  What makes it so appealing, is that you can be way ahead for a while, yet lose a second later, or vice versa. Because nothing is decided until the last player plays the very last boule. If he or she moves the target ball or knocks an opponent ball out of the way, the layout of the boules - and thus your score - may change dramatically.

Petanque Courts

Four of the six courts are “Soft Courts”, that is, they are sandier.  On these courts the players normally toss the Petanque balls using a swinging, palm down motion, so they get backspin upon release.  On the two “Hard Courts”, players normally use a palm up rolling or Bowling motion and the boules roll over the court towards the target.  So even if you have a shoulder injury that limits your motion, you can still play Petanque.

New guests and residents are welcomed with open arms, and quickly assimilated into the Petanque community. If you’ve never heard of Petanque, we welcome you to stop by at one of the scheduled times to try the game.  Loaner boules or balls are available at the courts.  The key to the cabinet is available at the Cypress Cove office.

Petanque Courts

November To May Schedule

Every day at 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM there are scheduled games.  Players of all levels assemble at the Petanque shelter and there is a card draw to assign players to teams.  Players of all levels are welcome. We play 2 games, no matter which team wins the first game.  The losing team rakes the court after each game.

May To November Schedule

Every day at 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM there are scheduled games.  Players of all levels assemble at the Petanque shelter and there is a card draw to assign players to teams.  Players of all levels are welcome.  We play 2 games, no matter which team wins the first game.  The losing team rakes the court after each game.

Free instruction is offered to beginners at any of the scheduled times.  There are usually fewer people playing at the afternoon sessions, is you prefer to learn in a smaller group.

Fun Petanque Tournaments

Two Fun tournaments are scheduled for during the winter months usually in late October or early November and in March.  Often we play Red vs. Blue and divide the players into teams using the normal card draw.  Every team plays two games with a 45 minutes time limit.  At the end of the first game, the teams rotate so a different team is the opponent in the second game.  The scores of each game are recorded and after two games, the winning team (Red or Blue) is determined. Often we follow these events with a social, including refreshments and a meal. A Petanquecommittee organizes these events and looks for volunteers to run them.

We look forward to meeting you on the Petanque Courts!
